$8 million to be invested in Aboriginal children

VANCOUVER - Aboriginal children and their families in 15 urban BC communities will benefit from an $8-million government investment in early childhood health and development, announced Premier Ujjal Dosanjh.

"With this funding we are providing Aboriginal communities with the resources to shape their own futures, said Dosanjh.

The $8-million in annual funding will help establish a system of early childhood development services in urban Aboriginal communities throughout the province. This community-based network of services will help to promote child, family and community wellness and identify Aboriginal Children six and under who will benefit from early identification and support services.

The Ministry for Children and Families is asking for proposals from service providers in the Duncan, Nanaimo, Courtenay, Port Alberni, Vancouver, Mission, Prince George, Chetwynd, Dawson Creek, Fort St John, For Nelson, Houston, Prince Rupert, Smithers and Terrace regions. The request has also been sent to Aboriginal organisations throughout BC and is posted at www.bcbid.ca on the Purchasing Commission's Web site.

"We all know that Aboriginal children and families throughout BC face challenges," said Children and Families Minister Edward John. "Through this investment in early childhood development, we are strengthening services for children and their families."

Ministry staff will consult with Aboriginal organisations to identify and build upon effective Aboriginal services, and to develop new elements needed to support a comprehensive, integrated and culturally responsive system for early childhood development.

Supporting First Nations and Aboriginal communities to develop and deliver services to their children, youth, and families is one of the ministry's priorities.
