MISTAWASIS FIRST NATION AND CANADA REACH $16-MILLION SPECIFIC CLAIM AGREEMENT

SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN Chief Daryl Watson of Mistawasis First Nation and the Honourable Robert Nault, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development today announced the settlement of an historic grievance, dating back to 1911, 1917 and 1919, when more than 18,000 acres of reserve lands were allegedly surrendered by the First Nation.

The settlement provides Mistawasis First Nation with $16.3 million in compensation for the damages and losses suffered as a result of the surrenders. In addition, costs associated with researching and negotiating the claim were covered by Canada.

"Now that this historic injustice has been corrected, we can look towards the future _ towards economic and social development, so that we can continue being active participants in the Saskatchewan economy," said Mistawasis Chief Daryl Watson.

"The settlement of this claim shows what Canada and First Nations can accomplish when we work together to address historical grievances through negotiations in good faith," said Minister Nault. "We have successfully reached a final settlement that not only honours CanadaÕs lawful obligation to Mistawasis, but will also provide the First Nation with expanded opportunities for economic development and the resources for greater self-sufficiency. Canada fully supports Mistawasis in its efforts to improve the quality of life for its membership and looks forward to a renewed partnership based on mutual respect and understanding."

The First Nation may use the settlement proceeds to purchase land on a "willing-seller/willing- buyer" basis and may acquire up to 18,155 acres to be set apart as reserve, subject to the Settlement Agreement and CanadaÕs Additions-to-Reserves Policy.

Mistawasis First Nation is located 68 kilometres west of Prince Albert. There are about 1,913 registered members of Mistawasis First Nation.
